The Tsolum River Restoration Society is working to clear out invasive American bullfrogs in the Comox Valley, due to their ability to choke out native species. On Monday night, the New Forest Act Roadshow, a campaign to reform provincial forestry legislation, stopped in Courtenay. The event was hosted by local organization Save Our Forests Comox Valley, as part of a series of presentations throughout B.C.  “The new Forest Act is a citizen-developed legislative proposal, and it's meant to replace the current forestry legislation in B.C. It has three key priorities. The first one is ecological integrity. The second one is community-based decision-making, and the other is community economies,” said Jennifer Houghton, campaign director for the proposed New Forest Act. A Comox Valley environmental group is reporting record Coho salmon smolt counts in Brooklyn Creek, following recovery efforts. ”We have the highest number we've ever had this year. And for us it's very positive because we did some work upstream on a farm where the farmer let us add some reeds for grown salmon to spawn, some spawning areas. And so we are thinking because we did that riparian work, we have this higher salmon count,” said Viviane Schmidt, volunteer with the Brooklyn Creek Watershed Society. The Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides provides service dogs at no costs to Canadians with disabilities. Every year they raise money by organizing walks in more than 200 communities across the country. Anita Holmboe is the coordinator for the Nanaimo Lions Foundation Dog Walk, which has been running since 2007. Holmboe explains why community support and donations are important to the organization. “It takes about $30,000 to $35,000 for a person to have a dog that’s trained for their disability. The Comox Valley Regional District is making sure residents are well-informed about where their water comes from. Watershed Awareness Week runs from May 26. to 30. The initiative, now in its third year, aims to educate the public about the importance of protecting the water supply. The Comox Lake watershed provides clean drinking water for more than 50,000 residents in the region. “The watershed is the source of our water supply. Fire season is underway in B.C. This year it could be more severe than usual. According to the B.C. Wildfire Service, 214 wildfires have been extinguished throughout the province since April 1. The season typically lasts from April to October, per Canada Wildfire. This year, climate scientists are seeing higher temperatures and drier conditions.
